Counseling & TeleMental Health Questions
What is TeleMental Health?
TeleMental Health refers to delivering counseling services through secure technology such as video conferencing, phone, or encrypted online platforms.
According to the rules and regulations of the state of Georgia, rule 135-11-.01, TeleMental Health:
“Means the mode of delivering services via technology-assisted media such as telephone, video, internet, smartphone, tablet, PC desktop system or other electronic means using appropriate encryption technology for electronic health information.”
TeleMental Health allows individuals to receive professional counseling from the privacy and comfort of their own space.
Is TeleMental Health a type of therapy?
No. TeleMental Health is not a type of therapy, but rather the method used to deliver therapy services.
The specific therapeutic approaches used during counseling sessions are based on the clinician’s training, experience, and professional expertise.
In which states are you licensed to provide counseling?
Dr. Rhodes is licensed to provide professional counseling services in:
Georgia – Licensed Professional Counselor
Florida – Registered Out-of-State Telehealth Provider
Delaware – Professional Counselor of Mental Health
New Jersey – Licensed Professional Counselor
Clients must be physically located in one of these states at the time of their counseling session.
I’ve never talked to anyone before. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?
Not at all.
Seeking help is a sign of strength, insight, and courage. Everyone experiences seasons where additional support is helpful. Counseling provides a confidential space to explore challenges, develop new coping strategies, and strengthen the tools you already possess.
What is the difference between talking to a therapist versus a friend or family member?
Friends and family can offer valuable support, but a licensed counselor provides:
Professional training and clinical expertise
Evidence-based strategies for change
Objective guidance without personal bias
A confidential space for honest exploration
Counseling also helps individuals develop skills that can be applied long after therapy concludes.
Why shouldn’t I just take medication?
Medication can help manage symptoms, but it does not always address the underlying causes of emotional or behavioral challenges.
Counseling focuses on:
identifying root causes
developing coping strategies
strengthening emotional regulation
supporting long-term personal growth
In some cases, medication and therapy may be used together as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
How does counseling work?
Counseling sessions are collaborative and tailored to each client’s goals.
During sessions, you may:
explore current challenges
develop practical strategies
strengthen emotional awareness
build skills for managing stress, relationships, and life transitions
Each person’s counseling journey is unique.
How long does therapy take?
The length of counseling varies depending on:
the goals you want to achieve
the complexity of the concerns being addressed
your level of engagement in the process
Some individuals benefit from short-term support, while others prefer longer-term therapeutic work.
How can I get the most out of therapy?
Clients who benefit most from counseling typically:
attend sessions consistently
remain open and honest during discussions
practice strategies discussed between sessions
actively engage in their personal growth process
The work done between sessions often produces the greatest transformation.
Should my partner and I attend counseling together or separately?
If both partners are willing to work on the relationship, couples counseling can be an effective starting point.
After initial work together, individual sessions may sometimes be appropriate depending on each partner’s needs.
